Hepatitis B and C both affect the liver, but they are different viruses. If a screening result is positive, ask which test confirms whether the infection is active.
For chronic hepatitis B, some people need antiviral treatment and regular monitoring. Treatment can reduce the risk of serious liver problems, but it generally does not remove the virus completely. Vaccination can prevent hepatitis B.
Hepatitis C has no vaccine. According to WHO, direct-acting antiviral medicines can cure more than 95% of people with the infection. The choice of medicine and length of treatment depend on your circumstances. Finish the prescribed course and attend follow-up testing.
