In brief
- Breathlessness can have many causes.
- Advanced liver disease can sometimes contribute to breathing problems.
- Sudden or severe breathlessness needs urgent care.
Someone with liver disease may also develop shortness of breath. Sometimes fluid around the lungs or changes in blood oxygen are related to advanced liver disease. A heart or lung condition may be responsible instead.
Tell a clinician when the symptom started, whether it changes when lying down or walking, and whether you have swelling, fever or chest pain. Bring your medicines and recent reports.
A clinician can decide whether you need oxygen measurement, imaging or specialist referral. If breathing becomes suddenly difficult or severe, seek emergency care rather than waiting for an appointment.
